Who Is Campion Bond?

In 1899, as acts of war pit nation against nation and the unthinkable threat of a first world war looms, “The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen” is launched. It is an uneasy teaming of several infamous literary characters, each one gifted or cursed with a unique and dangerous “talent” – each one troubled and unwilling to help. Their mission is clear, to stop The Fantom and save the world, but along the way each will face an equally difficult task, to tame his or her own inner demons…

LXG, the official shorthand for the unfortunately long titled film, looks to be one of the biggest films of 2003. Chances are, if you are reading this, you already know this film stars Sean Connery, Peta Wilson, Stuart Townshend, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh, and is based on the off-beat graphic novel by the genius Alan Moore. You probably already know the director is “Blade” helmer Stephen Norrington and has been filming in Prague since June. I’ve been following the progression of the film for about a year now, and noticed that a number of names have popped up for the role of Campion Bond, including Mr. Roxburgh and Jason Isaacs. As recently as last month, it was reported that Robbie Coltrane has finally landed the role.

So imagine my surprise today, when the following appeared in a report that crossed my desk this morning…

CAMPION BOND: British, mid to late 30s, a strikingly handsome man, very cool, hip, he is Chief of the British Secret Service. Bond, flanked by soldiers, meets our heroes on the Ice Plains, apologizing for his delayin coming to their rescue. He then explains they’ve had a spy among them all along who has kept him abreast of their situation. When an aide interrupts with a note from the Queen, Bond announces that Her Majesty would like to induct the distinguished group as a real league. Although he implores them to accept the new mission, he gets no takers…

So no surprise there either. But now I believe we know why they’re having so much trouble casting the role…

1 speech & 8 lines, 1 scene. THIS ROLE CLOSES THE FILM AND MAY RETURN IN SEQUEL.

May returnr

It’s always dangerous to begin shooting a film before all your roles are cast. And it’s very dangerous to begin casting for a role six months into shooting. But to tell an actor that a once important potential franchise role has been scaled so far back that the role might be cut from the franchise… well, no wonder no one is biting.

The shooting date for Campion Bond’s scene will be February 17, in either Prague or Los Angeles… if Fox can find an actor for the role.
