The Early Report for June 20, 2006: Part Two

This second part of the Early Report highlights the newest release date changes and additions, title changes and MPAA ratings, as well as estimated screen counts for all films scheduled for release between August 2006 and Summer 2009.

Most Recent Release Date Changes and Additions

Angel-A (Sony Pictures Classics): The first directorial effort from Luc Besson since 1998’s “The Messenger” will arrive on American shores September 29

American Hardcore (Sony Pictures Classics): Paul Rachman’s documentary about the early 1980s American punk rock scene will open in select markets on September 22

The Blood Diamond (Warner Brothers): Since it’s not likely Leonardo DiCaprio will get an Oscar nomination for his appearance in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed,” The Shield has bumped up the release of this Leo movie, a drama about the illegal diamond trade in Sierra Leone, to December 15

Charlie Bartlett (MGM): A rich kid becomes the self-appointed psychiatrist to the student body of his new high school, in this comedy directed by the editor of “Austin Powers in Goldmember” and “Meet the Parents,” opening April 4

Conversations with Other Women (Fabrication Films): Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart star in this drama about two strangers who meetcute at a wedding, opening in select markets on August 11

Death at a Funeral (MGM): Matthew Macfayden, Rupert Graves and Peter Dinklage star in Frank Oz’s latest, about a man who tries to expose a dark secret regarding a recently deceased patriarch of a dysfunctional British family, in theatres April 27

Facing the Giants (Samuel Goldwyn Films): This inspirational drama about a high school football coach who uses his undying faith to battle the giants of fear and failure will open in select markets on September 29

Flyboys (MGM): Tony Bill’s World War I drama featuring James Franco and Jean Reno has moved up from October 13 to September 29

The History Boys (Fox Searchlight Pictures): With this week’s Tony Award win for its Broadway counterpart, the filmed version of Alan Bennett’s play will open in major markets on November 24

Hostel 2 (Lionsgate): Following the pattern of the “Saw” series, Eli Roth is rushing a sequel to his hit horror film into production, so it can make its scheduled January 5 release date

The House of Sand (Sony Pictures Classics): Andrucha Waddington’s Brazilian drama has been pushed back from July 28 to August 11

Killshot (The Weinstein Company/MGM): “Shakespeare in Love” director John Madden’s adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel gets another bump around the release schedule, now landing on October 20

Lars and the Real Girl (MGM): Well, it was bound to happen someday. A delusional young guy strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet, in this comedy starring Ryan Gosling, opening July 27, 2007

The Lives of Others (Sony Pictures Classics): German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s debut tells the story of an East German loyalist looking to gain favor with the party by spying on a popular playwright. Look for it in American theatres beginning February 23

Offside (Sony Pictures Classics): Jafar Panahi’s sports dramedy about six Iranian girls who disguise themselves as boys in order to enter Tehran’s Azadi Stadium to watch the 2006 World Cup Asian zone qualifier between Iran and Bahrain (Iranian law forebids women, you see, from entering all sports stadiums) will open in the States on March 2, far too late to latch onto the current World Cup fervor

Pan’s Labyrinth (Picturehouse): Guillermo Del Toro’s Spanish-language fantasy/thriller has been bumped back from September 29 to December 29

The Protector (The Weinstein Company): The new film from Thai martial arts sensation Tony Jaa, previously known as “Tom Yum Goong,” will open in select markets on November 10

Pulse (The Weinstein Company): More last minute reshoots have caused the Kristen Bell-led American remake of another little-known J-horror film to be pushed back again, from July 14 to September 8

The Queen (Miramax Films): Stephen Frears’s intimate behind the scenes glimpse at the interaction between Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Tony Blair during their power struggle following the death of Princess Diana will now open on Christmas Day, two months later than last scheduled

Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (Sony Pictures Classics): Zhang Yimou follows “Hero” and “House of Flying Daggers” with this quiet drama about a son reconnecting with his dying father, which will now open on September 1, two weeks earlier than last set

Volver (Sony Pictures Classics): The new Pedro Almodovar film has been pushed back from October 20 to November 3

Zoom (Columbia Pictures): The Tim Allen superhero comedy is back in for August 11
