A chubby, extra creepy Peter Lorre kills children in Fritz Lang’s seminal, moody crime thriller. Not unlike Lang’s earlier masterpiece Metropolis, M is a story about the mass inner-workings of a degenerating society. But, whereas the former film had robots and overt class struggle, this one has trickier notions of morality and legality in the form of a city-wide manhunt for a killer of children played by Peter Lorre (in his first famous starring role) and modelled after the infamous Vampire of Dusseldorf, Peter Kurten.
